Rome that was

Boats passing, horses galloping happy across the sand,
A recollection of a Roman past,
When gladiators trained here,
All for Rome, protect her on conquest.
Paradox.
Now spotted plastic debris
From cruise ships
- (they know better but laws don't matter): tampons, ear buds, bottles, bags and bits,
Dotted across the beach
Made of many thousand year minerals
Divided, conquered
For us to pick up.
No matter this place's history,
The ignorance of one to many men,
Impacts the surroundings just enough for a step towards change,
Directing time's long hand to tick with the passing tides of the moon.
